To earn the Brownie Try-It, you need to complete four of the following requirements - including requirements #1 and #2 (which are required):
#1: Start With The Basics (required)
All skaters start out with the basics -- so, to start on a skating adventure, learn two basic skating skills, such as:
A march into a two-foot glide
Swizzle
2 foot turn
Crossover
#2: Safety First! (required)
As with any sport, safety is key to having fun! Before you go skating, learn to fall and get up. Also, make a list of the proper safety gear for a beginning skater - and tell why being safe is important.
#3: Brrrrrrrr ...
It's really cold inside a skating rink! To keep warm, do some research and discover the appropriate clothing that you should wear inside a skating rink. What kind of clothing should you wear? What kind of socks under your skates? Should you have a jacket - and why?
#4: Equipment Check
Skates come in all styles and sizes. Whether they're rentals or skates of your very own, can you identify the two main parts? What are some differences between rental skates and personal skates? Find out how much a pair of skates of your very own would cost.
#5: Stopping
Stopping is a very important part of ice skating. If you've ever seen skaters on TV, you've seen that those skaters don't slam into the wall to stop! Learn to do a basic skating stop, such as a snowplow stop.
#6: Glide On
Gliding is a very important part of skating. Even the most professional skaters had to learn how! Gliding is a skill that can be used in both skating forward and backward. It's also used to hold positions in spins and jumps. So, for your gliding pleasure, learn to do a one-foot glide.
#7: Famous Skaters
There are many figure skaters throughout the world. Learn about two famous female skaters from any country. How many medals have they received? What was the most remarkable thing that they did?
#8: Show Off Your Skills
Either by yourself, or with a group of friends, participate as part of a skating recital - either to a piece of music or to no music at all. Either way, you'll have a blast - and you'll feel like a professional skater.
